The Monsoon Southeast Asia Collection was proud to have collaborated with Appetite.sg on a collector’s exhibition, A Bird Flies Into A Mirror, featuring the works of six contemporary artists from the Philippines: Raena Abella, Poklong Anading, Annie Cabigting, Roberto Chabet, Nona Garcia, Wawi Navarozza. Linked by their conceptual approaches to artmaking, these Filipino contemporary artists are part of ongoing critical discourses of conceptual art and regional practices.
Curated by Appetite, in close collaboration with the collection's founders, the show highlighted the perpetual conversation that exists between contemporaneity and its response to art’s historical canon, in relation to the complex and diverse inheritance of Southeast Asia’s own cultural and historical landscape. In their use of vernacular expressions and appropriation of visual codes to respond to local specificities, the works questioned the relationship between representation and what is being represented, challenging what the image can reveal. A Bird Flies Into A Mirror ran from April 12 – 27 August 2022.
