Joan of Arc
Wong Hoy Cheong
Duratrans, lightbox - 2008
85 cm x 170 cm, Edition 2 of 5 + 1 AP
Wong Hoy Cheong’s Maid in Malaysia, (2008) series engages with issues of migration, displacement, and global commodification by photographing domestic helpers in Malaysia in the guise of famous women. This particular work depicts Filipino and Indonesian domestic workers as Joan of Arc and her army of brave women soldiers. The sad story of female migrant workers, many of whom leave behind their own families to work as domestic helpers elsewhere, is given a different spin in which these marginalised and usually underpaid women are celebrated as the noble and brave heroines that they are.
