Wong Hoy Cheong received a BA in literature from Brandeis University, Massachusetts, in 1982, and an M.Ed. from Harvard University in 1984. In 1986, he received an MFA in painting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and in 2011 was awarded the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Creative Fellowship. Working across a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, photography, performance and film, Wong’s practice engages with issues such as colonialism, migration, identity, and globalisation to produce multi-layered works that suggest a multiplicity of interpretations within their narratives. He has exhibited widely in Malaysia and internationally, including solo exhibitions at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 1996 and 2004 and at Eslite Gallery, Taipei in 2010. He has also participated in various group exhibitions including the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003; The Liverpool Biennial in 2004; the Istanbul Biennial in 2007; the  6th Taipei Biennial in 2009; the 10th Bienniale de Lyon in 2009; and the Singapore Art Museum in 2011. Wong lives and works in Kuala Lumpur.
