Plus Minus, (2009) is a monochromatic mise-en-scene work developed by Wawi Navarozza while on residency in New York City. The image subverts the notion of the "corner office," a space synonymous with corporate success, power, and hyper-capitalism. Here, a work desk stands in a windowless corner. The contents of this office have been covered up with black cloth, rendering them useless, mute, perhaps even grieving. A pair of black leggings hangs over a chair, their dangling form is the only suggestion of human presence (or absence) in this strange scene. Despite its stillness, the image also suggests movement through the whiteness that seems to flow out from the rest of the room and the large angled wheels of the table. Navarozza's Plus Minus invites us to contemplate the meaning of work, success, and personal fulfillment in an increasingly materialistic and competitive society.
