Cross
Nona Garcia
Oil on canvas - 2015
165 cm x 119.3 cm
An almost-universally recognized form, the intersecting lines of the cross is both a remembrance of the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ and a sacred symbol of the faith of his believers. Social, political, and cultural movements in the last century, however, have allowed its meanings to change, embodying both the sacred and the profane, spirituality and pop culture, religion and its rejection. Nona Garcia’s Cross, 2015 is an inquiry into the essence of this familiar object, playing with what is seen and unseen to delve into its meanings, as well as to engage with larger questions of religion’s place in contemporary society and its inextricable links to Filipino identity and culture.
