Erased Slogans Set of 97
Kiri Dalena
97 prints, archival ink on rag baryta photo paper - 2008-2015 / 2023
Variable dimensions, Edition 1/1 + 1AP.
Kiri Dalena engages with the history of political turmoil and protest in the Philippines. Working on archival news photographs of mass gatherings in Manila against the Marcos administration in the 1970s, Dalena digitally removed the slogans on placards and banners carried by protesters. The empty spaces represent the silenced voices and the historical amnesia that has characterised Philippine politics over the years.
This set of 97 images was reprinted by the artist in 2023 following water damage sustained by the original set of durst lamda prints which was exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and the National Museum of Art Osaka in 2015.
