Mit Jai Inn
Several of Mit Jai Inn’s early experiences remain influential to him, including the communal and aesthetic aspects of being raised in an indigenous Yong weaving village, a meditation and political practice drawn from six years as a Theravada Buddhist monk, and the labour and endurance of training two years as a professional Muay Thai boxer. Mit obtained a degree in Art from Silpakorn University, Bangkok in 1986 and pursued further studies at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna from 1987 to 1992, during which time he worked as assistant to artist Franz West. Returning to Chiang Mai in 1992, Mit initiated social and politically focused art initiatives, including co-founding Chiang Mai Social Installation in 1992, and working with Midnight University and The Land Foundation. In 2015, Mit also founded Cartel Artspace in Bangkok, a gallery focused on Thai and Southeast Asian historical and current contexts. Mit’s recent exhibitions include: Mit Jai Inn: Dreamworld at Ikon Gallery, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK in 2021, Actants at Silverlens, Manila in 2019; Encounters, Art Basel Hong Kong in 2019; Sunshower: Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia from 1980s to Today at Mori Art Museum and Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in 2017; and SUPERPOSITION: Equilibrium and Engagement, The 21st Biennale of Sydney in 2018.
