Newfoundland N 47° 9’ 35.424”, W 49° 55’ 18.75", 2015 reflects a journey that Martha Atienza took on a cargo ship from North America to Europe. Although the voyage was the fulfillment of a personal dream to see the Atlantic Ocean, the dramatic conditions she encountered on board were far from her expectations. Filmed in a single shot, the work captures the rough waters, pouring rain, and thick mists of a turbulent sea journey. Just like the painted seascapes of Turner and David, the work instills a sense of awe for the beauty and untamed power of nature. In viewing these images of the sea, our romantic notions of exploring unchartered territories are tempered by the contemporary realities of large-scale international migration, climate change, decolonization and the search for national identity, and global trade.
