Pulse

Pulse, (2024) speaks about the rapid urbanization and environmental change observed by the artist in his hometown but it also conveys his own post-pandemic state of mind. At the center of the work is a glowing glass cube, a small terrarium of verdant nature protected from the burnt-out ground. Above the cube, an amorphous shape seems to emerge from the darkness revealing yet another imagined landscape. While the work’s predominantly dark palette conveys a sense of gravity and even sadness, hope is also evident in the cube’s unearthly glow and lush colors. It might also be said that the darkness is not fully opaque, allowing for the imagination to find a way out of the void.  In layering the painting with these multiple terrains, Ching invites us to explore the intricate connections between our own inner landscapes and the broader world that we inhabit.
