Lec Cruz Dichotomy Within
© Lec Cruz. Image courtesy of the artist and West Gallery.

This large-scale painting is an abstracted self-portrait of the artist in his studio, surrounded by his paintings and various objects. The work engages with notions of authorship and authenticity, questioning the artist's relationship with his own art and the creative process. Since 2021, the artist has been creating multiple painting studies which he then fed into an AI program to develop a final image. While based on his own works, this image also draws from big data gathered from multiple nameless users.  Could this image have existed without the aid of an external program? How has technology enhanced or stifled original thought and creativity? The scale of the work and his use of bold colours and fragmented shapes convey the deep emotional and intellectual turmoil engendered by this process of artistic self-introspection.
