Series 9
Latthapon Korkiatarkul
Thai Baht Series 9 banknote, plexiglass, and wood - 2019
5 panels, 25.5 cm x 19 cm x 4 cm, Edition 2 of 3
In Series 9, (2019), the artist laboriously scraped several banknotes to reflect on the value of currency as a symbol of national identity, economic power, and stability. Through the laborious process of scraping off the special inks that give banknotes their markings and status as legal tender, the artist returns the paper to its pristine white form. In collecting the powder that was carefully scraped off, the artist is not making a political commentary but a moral one. For him, the powder in the vitrine represents the happiness that once had so much monetary value; on the other hand, true bliss might lie in the rejection of such worldly desires.
