Khvay Samnang
Khvay Samnang is a visual artist from Cambodia. His multidisciplinary practice addresses historical and traditional culture as well as the societal impact of colonialism and globalization. Intrinsic to his work is his personal and direct engagement with local communities. His works have been exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia and the US, and extensively across Europe and Asia. Khvay graduated with a BA in Painting from the Royal University of Fine Art, Phnom Penh in 2006. He is a founding and active member of the first contemporary artist collective Stiev Selapak/Art Rebels that established Sa Sa Art Gallery, SA SA BASSAC, the first dedicated exhibition spaces for contemporary art in Cambodia, as well as Sa Sa Art Projects, a community-based, knowledge-sharing platform and experimental residency program. Khvay was a resident at Tokyo Wonder Site in 2009 and 2011. His work has been widely exhibited in various exhibitions across Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America, including the Helsinki Biennial 2021, Helsinki Art Museum, Helsinki, Finland; Frieze 2019 London, United Kingdom, 21st Biennale of Sydney: Superposition – Equilibrium and Engagement, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 2018; and Documenta 14, EMST, Athens, Greece, and Ottoneum, Kassel, Germany. He lives and works in Phnom Penh.
