Jumaldi Alfi
Jumaldi Alfi (Indonesia, b. 1972) is one of the most dynamic and influential contemporary artists of his generation in the Indonesian art scene. Alfi came to international attention in the late 1990s as one of the founding members of the influential Jendela Art Group, a contemporary art collective that eschewed the conventions of socio-political themes and the technical sophistication of realist painting, choosing instead to focus on aesthetic and material explorations of line, colour, and texture.
Alfi’s paintings and sculptures are marked by a high level of innovation, skill, and emotional depth. His works engage with history, memory, and place, using symbols and imagery to reflect the spiritual and existential struggles of the human condition. Drawing from literature, nature, archives, and memory, Alfi takes from these various sources to come to terms with present realities and find pathways towards the future.
He graduated from the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta in 1999. He has participated in several international art fairs and has presented several solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia, Amsterdam, Singapore, Germany, and Australia. He currently lives and works in Yogyakarta.
