In On Paradise, On Love, (2017) Jompet Kuswidananto explores the links between religion and radicalism in Indonesia. Scenes of misty landscapes are set to the sound of a male voice singing in Bahasa Indonesia about martyrdom through holy war. This song was penned by Imam Samudra, one of the terrorists who were responsible for the 2002 Bali Bombings, prior to his execution in 2008. Even at his death, he remained unrepentant for the attacks which killed over 200 people.

Alternating with this is a female voice singing, in English, about peace and love. The lyrics of both songs weave in and out, as in a karaoke video, as audiences are left to contemplate how this fundamental clash of ideologies and religious beliefs in Southeast Asia has had far-reaching consequences for countries and people globally.

I would die as a martyr

When my eyes are blindfolded

and being wounded

So long father and mother

Kids, wife, brothers and sisters

We’ll meet again in the afterlife

There we will live forever

In paradise we will meet

In paradise we will be happy

In paradise we will meet

In paradise we will be happy

Israel and the US are our eternal enemies

US and its allies will be beaten to death

In paradise we will meet

In paradise we will be happy

This is our song

Song of the light

That shines like the sunrise

In the dark of the East

This is our song

Song of the peace

Sings the new world’s beauty

Brings down the glory

This is our song our world

Voice of the brave

Riding all through the waves

Brings joy and happiness

This is our Song, a song for all

That all nations can sing

That’s the love we bring
