Jigger Cruz (Philippines, b.1984) is an artist whose contemporary painting practice is informed by traditional painting, religious iconography, and street art. Using figurative painting’s formal and compositional concerns as his starting point, Cruz thereafter subjects his works to thick layers of impasto oil and spray paint. This process of creation and defacement results in a visual paradox of disruption and harmony. Cruz is also interested in the possibilities of painting as object, pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a painting or a sculpture, often exposing surfaces and including frames as elements in his work.

Jigger Cruz lives and works in Manila, Philippines. He studied Fine Arts at the Far Eastern University in the Philippines and Design at De La Salle-College of St. Benilde. He has exhibited widely throughout the Philippines and internationally, including Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Israel, United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
