Gary Ross Pastrana
Carved wooden figure on MDF plinth - 2019
Object: 134.62 cm (H) x 88.90 cm (L) x 20.32 cm (D) | Pedestal: 109.22 cm (H) x 114.3 cm (L) x 53.34 cm (D)
Gary Ross Pastrana transforms Boston Dynamics’ mobile robot, Spot, into a wooden sculpture reminiscent of the traditional Ifugao sculptures of mountain rice gods or bulul. The sculpture’s black patina and placement on a pedestal gives it the aura of a mythical animal deity. Fusing the past and the future in its serenely seated form, the work is a contemplation of time and the complex relationship between humans and technology. Considering the exponential rate at which technology replaces things valued by generations before, Lot-01 Provisional Objects Series (Eidolon II), (2019) is a reminder that within the inherent possibilities of technological innovation also lies its future obsolescence.
