Writing in the Rain

Writing in the Rain, (2011) depicts Indonesian artist FX Harsono writing his Chinese name with ink, even as the falling rain makes his efforts futile. Known as an artist engaged with socio-political issues, Harsono’s later works focused on his Chinese roots and culture, in light of the marginalisation of the ethnic Chinese community in Indonesia.The capability of video to record time and space adds longevity to an ephemeral art form like performance and its reproducibility allows it to be shared across multiple geographies.
