Visual disturbances on the moonlit ocean’s surface are captured as polarized swirls and threads of light in Frank Callaghan’s photo series, Flux. Intentionally agitating the water with a makeshift apparatus fitted with wooden planks, the artist used long exposures to record the myriad patterns and dynamic movements created by the flux. Flux 08, (2020) is a mesmerizing image of abstraction in nature, reminiscent of the ethereal beauty of x-ray imaging or the mysteries of space. It is  also a contemplation of time and the global disruption caused by the pandemic. For the artist who spent the lockdown observing the rhythm of the tides and the waxing and waning of the moon, he took much comfort in the knowledge that every disruption eventually finds equilibrium in stillness.
