Known for her contemporary portraits using fabric and thread, Eugenia Alcaide was inspired to translate her dynamic single-line drawings created on her computer into a physical, material form. In Julia, (2012), Eugenia creates a double portrait that captures her subject’s inner and outer worlds. The outlines of the two Julias overlap and merge, as cords of black thread connect and entangle around her forms like overgrown vines. In this work, Alcaide’s remarkable ability to capture emotion through material is portrayed in the figure’s two aspects, a sensitive and vulnerable side that remains quietly hidden behind the assured gaze that is projected to the outside world.
