Eko Nugroho graduated from the Indonesian Art Institute in Yogyakarta in 2006. His distinctive style, which is informed by his interest in street art, graffiti, and comics, combines bold imagery with subtle socio-political commentary embedded in his paintings, drawings, tapestries, murals, sculptures, and video works. Nugroho has exhibited widely across Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe, with solo shows in Asia Society, New York, USA in 2017; the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 2016; Arario Gallery, Seoul, Korea in 2013; the Singapore Tyler Print Institute, Singapore in 2013, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France in 2012. His works are included in the collections of international institutions such as the Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris; The Guy & Myriam Ullens Foundation; Singapore Art Museum; Musée des Beaux-arts de Lyon; Artnow International, A3 Collection, San Francisco USA; Tropen Museum Amsterdam, Netherlands; Arario Collection, Cheonan, Korea; Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art Brisbane Australia; and Asia Society Museum, New York, USA. He lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
