Time is often measured in numerical terms -- hours, minutes, seconds. Dawn Ng explores the concept of time as states of matter in her series, Into Air. Freezing blocks of pigment, paints, and colours mixed with water, the artist uses these materials to encapsulate time into a solid form. She then filmed how these blocks melted, making visible the process by which time unfolds as solid turns into liquid. The title of the work, Waterfall #3, Time Lost Falling in Love, alludes to the way human perceptions of time seem to change with our emotions, such as the way time seems to stop when we fall in love. But the melting block also asks us to question how much time we humans might have left, in light of the rapid pace at which ancient glaciers of the earth are melting.
