An image involves reducing an object or a person into a form that can be recorded, circulated, and understood. In Untitled (portrait 1 and 2, under the same sun), (2026), Lopez explores the gap that exists between an image and the totality of what it depicts. An image is always a partial representation of reality; a photograph captures only what is found within the camera’s frame just as a portrait might capture the likeness of a person at a particular moment in time. The perforated surface of computer punch cards extends this concept materially by preventing the reproduction of the full image and recalls the data loss that occurs as digital images are continually edited and compressed. By rendering the images in monochrome, Lopez gives these portraits the ghostly aura of negative films to recall analogue processes that influenced newer technologies of visual reproduction.
