Life, Death, Rebirth: It's All Mystery
Charles Buenconsejo
Single Channel Video - 2014
5 minutes loop
Greek tradition calls for smashing plates at gatherings as an end to the period of mourning following the death of a loved one or as a way to conspicuously display wealth to their guests. In his 5 minute looped video, the artist recorded the random act of smashing plates against a blank wall of a residential rooftop terrace. As he threw plate after plate on the ground, the ceramic materials exploded into hundreds of tiny shards. This performative act of destruction is offered as a parallel to the performative act of creation in abstract painting, where the randomness of gestures creates the uniqueness of the work.
