Charles Buenconsejo
Charles Buenconsejo (Philippines, b. 1984) is an artist based in Auckland, New Zealand. His practice builds upon an ongoing inquiry and deconstruction of visual culture, from the physical components of the image to its social and personal functions as both means of surveillance and tool for self-actualization. His work is heavily informed by contradictions, in particular the photograph now as both an instance of available light and as a digitized sequence. It shows how one surface can contain both the poetry of the creative act and the routine of living in the age of the algorithm. He studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines and worked in commercial photography for a time. He has participated in several solo and group exhibitions and was a recipient of the prestigious Ateneo Art Awards in 2013 and 2014 which earned him a residency with the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo, Australia.
