King of Vegan (Triptych)
Angki Purbandono
Scanography, light box - 2012
3 panels, 100 cm x 180 cm x 13 cm each

Known for his scanography, Angki Purbandono creates photographic images in which everyday objects such as toy figures, sardine cans, cut vegetables, and noodles are enlarged in vivid detail. Made with a flat-bed scanner rather than a camera, Purbandono’s works are studies in contrast, both in their use of light and in their composition.
In King of Vegan,(2012), Purbandono presents a contemporary memento mori, a contemplation of the fleeting nature of life. This was a popular theme in 17th century Europe when religious fervour for the afterlife tempered more worldly desires. In this triptych, a skull sits with a plant in between its teeth. This passionate gesture often associated with lively Spanish dances seems incongruous when paired with the lifeless skull and becomes a humorous reminder of the end that awaits all of us, regardless of our diet.
