Only A Traveller

Only A Traveller, 2020 is a series of moving images taken by Amelia Yuliana in Edinburgh, Scotland. The series explores prayer as a private act of worship which, according to Islamic tradition, may be carried out anywhere as long it follows three main conditions:  that it is safe, clean, and unobtrusive. Filmed in various locations during the 5 times of prayer in the Quran – Subuh (Sunrise), Zuhor (Midday), Asar (Late afternoon), Maghrib (Dusk) and Isyak (Between Sunset and Midnight), the work also raises questions on the place of spirituality in contemporary society as well as the continued power of religion to unite, and divide, people.
